I am almost 11 months post op, but due to a crazy rest of June schedule I had my 1 year visit with Dr Walton today. It was a GREAT visit. I thought I might get scolded for admitting to snacking, but Dr Walton was actually okay with it since I am eating healthy snacks and not reverting to carbs. He gave me his typical year post op speech about the newness of the surgery wearing off, the fact that nothing can take away the genetic predisposition to be overweight, and warned me again that society (friends, family, and especially coworkers) would try to sabotage my efforts. When I told him how supportive my coworkers have been he said that is highly unusual. It is true though -- we have lunch provided quite a bit and even the pharmaceutical reps have been good about bringing in what they know I can eat.
I did talk to him about the fact that I have been stuck in basically the same spot for the last month. He said that only about 1 percent of people get to ideal body weight. He is happy with where I am at and he said what matters most is if I am happy with where I am at. I am. I am wearing size 10 and 12 and never could have imagined that a year ago. He provided some suggestions for things to try if I did want to try to lose some more. He told me not to change the food I am eating but to add more exercise. But, in doing so he suggested I do the VO2 testing in order to determine the heart rate at which my body burns fat. I have thought off and on about having it done so on the way out I scheduled it for June 23rd. He said that it is also possible I will actually gain weight as my body builds muscle instead of losing but not to get caught up in the numbers, but rather how I feel.
One other comment he made was that I do not have very much loose skin for having lost over 100 lbs. I do have some, but admit it is not as much as I anticipated.
I don't have to go back for 6 months and then yearly after that unless I am having problems or something shows up on my labs. Speaking of which, I have one of my nurses draining me dry in the morning -- EIGHT tubes in order to do all the ordered tests!
In 11 months I have conquered obesity, and I couldn't be happier!
